About the University of the Aegean
The University of the Aegean was founded in 1984 and has 5 Schools and 18 Departments with a student population exceeding 10,000 (undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral candidates) and almost 500 faculty members. The central administration of the University is located on the island of Lesvos, while various Schools and Departments have been established on the islands Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros, Lesvos and Limnos.
The Interdepartmental Program of Postgraduate Studies in ‘Tourism Planning, Management and Policy’ offers a Master of Science degree as well as PhD studies, focusing on a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of tourism. The Program has been jointly run, since 1998, in the city of Chios, Chios island, by 4 Departments of the University of the Aegean, namely the Department of Business Administration, the Department of Geography, the Department of Environment, and the Department of Social Anthropology and History. Through joint research and education initiatives by the latter departments, it provides students both with a basic education and systematic erudition on diverse tourism issues, thus enabling them to acquire the academic bedrock to conceptualize the complexity of tourism, sharpening their ability to deal with a variety of tourism issues. In specific, it offers in-depth study and analysis in different academic disciplines related to tourism, such as Economy, Sociology, Geography, Social Anthropology, Business Management and Marketing, Computer Science, Environmental Studies and Rural Planning.
The Laboratory for Tourism Research and Studies (ETEM) belongs to the Department of Business Administration of the University of the Aegean and is located in the city of Chios, on Chios island. Its purpose has been to support research and education requirements in tourism studies, taught in the Department of Business Administration at the University of the Aegean, as well as in the Interdepartmental Graduate Program, “Tourism Planning, Management and Policy”, offered by the same Department, in cooperation with the Department of the Environment, the Department of Geography and the Department of Social Anthropology and History, University of the Aegean. Its research specialization lies in the broader discipline of tourism, with an emphasis on: Management of Tourism and Tourist Enterprises, Tourist Development, Economics of Tourism, Environment and Tourism, Sociology of Tourism and Information Technology in Tourism.
